OOC: This manual will be written in IC (in-character) format. That is, written as if talking directly to your character, not to the player behind the character. Should it become necessary, occasionally a quote box like this one will be inserted with the letters "OOC" (out of character) to indicate that rules or instructions are considered for the player, NOT the character.

Welcome to PottersWorld! Our site has been open for a number of years and during that time, there have been a few common mistakes we sometimes see occurring from new and returning members. This is okay as we understand it takes time to get used to the rules of our site. Below, we've compiled a list of what we hope are helpful reminders from our Terms of Service and How to Role-Play guide that may help you moving forward. 

Posts under 50 words

Our rules state that you must make a post with 50 words or more. If you're struggling with your word count, try thinking about your character's emotions, about the surroundings, give them something to do and something more to say. It may be worth scanning through the posts of others to see how they do it.

OOC Comments

In your role-playing posts, we ask that you keep any OOC comments to citing a translation or giving credit to the source of a quote or topic title. If you wish to tell your RPing partner something or if you need to contact them, you can send them a PM. 

Foreign Words & Translations

If your character uses more than 5 foreign words in a post, you need to provide a translation at the bottom of your post in an OOC note.

Emoticons

During your posts with other characters, emoticons should not be used. This includes topic titles, tags, and OOC notes.

Fonts and text colors

Our system is set up so that the text you type and post is very legible -- the font size is a good one and the default color works best. For consistency and legibility, we ask that you use the default font, size, and color for regular posting purposes. This goes for dialogue too. While some RPG sites encourage dialogue to be in another color or bolded, that is not the case on PW. 

God-moding

You only control the actions of your character, not anyone else's, and you should not be making suggestions as to the words or actions of the person you're RPing with unless you have their express permission. Please ask first or avoid doing anything that could be considered GMing.

In Character / Out of Character Knowledge

Unless your character has been told something, they don't know it. Even if it's there in the above post, unless it's been written to imply that it's obvious for all to see, it's not IC (in character) knowledge.

Closed Threads

This one works both ways. If a thread is tagged as closed or for certain characters only, you should not post in the topic without prior permission of the thread creator. Feel free to watch it all you like, although all knowledge you reap that way must remain OOC (out of character), as stated above.

The reverse of this rule - if you want to RP with one or few specific people, then when making your thread, make sure to mark in the topic tag that it's closed, or that it's for a certain person only.

And last but not least -

Your character will have plenty of time to grow and develop on PW. Have fun!

This topic is a guide to the do’s and don’ts of roleplaying in our play-by-post format. Hopefully with the reading of this, you can have a better idea about how to role-play on this board, especially if this is your first time. Please read this carefully.

What is Roleplaying?

Roleplaying is the act of telling a story from your character’s point of view, while other people and their character contribute to it as well. You all begin on a specific plot line with a common knowledge background, which, in this case, is the Harry Potter universe and the back-story used by this board (please read The Story Continues). You do this by making posts in a topic, interacting with one or more other characters. Through your dialogue and descriptions of your character's emotions or their surroundings, as well as their reactions to other characters, you pretend to be a student attending Hogwarts.
